On October 12, members gathered to watch and learn about framing from Linda Blow.  Linda demonstrated the entire framing process, from cutting the mat to applying the dust cover for a painting mounted in a wood frame.

The group had several questions and shared information on tools and materials.  Each participant received a step-by-step handout on framing developed by Patti Bishop and a list of places to buy frames.  The session ended with our usual drawing for door prizes.

Spring Juried Show at the Biggs

T
hanks to everyone who participated in our juried exhibition at the Biggs Museum of American Art.  The lovely grouping of art highlights our diversity in technique and subject matter.  If you have a chance, go see it. The show runs through May 29.

About 130 people enjoyed members’ paintings in our spring show at the Biggs on May 6. Ryan Grover, curator, and his staff did a wonderful job in displaying the 50 works in the second floor gallery of the museum.

Well-known artist Kass Morin Freeman, AWS, NWS, employed her personal vision and expertise in selecting and awarding paintings for the show. She focused on good designs, innovative spirit, and great technical skills.

Freeman’s statement noted that First Place winner Susan Johnston’s She Grew Up There reflects the barrenness of a cold, dry winter’s day through its complicated and sinewy shapes with the drab colors.

She praised Nancy Brown’s Shadows in Sotto, the Second Place winner, for its raw energy of color and motion, and John Hassler’s Third Place painting, Tree Reflections, demonstrates his masterful technique of the medium, which suits the subject matter perfectly.

Each Juror’s Choice recipient offered something unique. The powerful, cool shapes of Erika Neidhardt’s Recalculating seemed to float above a fiery world, drawing the viewer in. Anne Bellenger’s Out on a Limb reveals an arresting and powerful design of the raccoon and its surrounds, especially the thin slash of red and the dark branches. The fresh brushwork of Lesley McCaskills’s Swimming on Ollie’s Pond, allows the viewer to move continuously through the scene, pausing occasionally at the dark spots of nesting birds. Doris Davis-Glackin’s Cornwall Poppy approached iconic in the detail of the flower and the color choice between the subject and the background.

Member News

Gerilyn Caskill sold her painting, Start Your Engines, which was juried into the Biggs show.

DWS award winners from the Biggs show also won awards and recognition in the Baltimore Watercolor Society’s 2011 Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition juried by John Salminen, AWS, NWS.

Doris Davis-Glackin’s Looking Up; John Hassler’s Summer Snow Fence; and Susan Johnston’s Sticks & Stones all took top honors.

Congratulations everyone.

Elizabeth Collard is the Guest Artist, at Benfield Gallery in Severna, MD.  Collard has on display several watercolor and silk paintings through June 8th  Her painting, Flowers of the Sun, is executed on silk using watercolor techniques.

If you have suggestions for workshop topics, or would like to volunteer to present a workshop, please contact Don Blow at artisto1@comcast.net.  If you submit your idea or program now, it will be discussed at our May board meeting.

June 18 – Annual Meeting and Luncheon

Mark your calendars for the DWS annual meeting, Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Glade Clubhouse, 16 Farm Glade Drive, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.   This year we will be asking for a $10 donation to cover the luncheon.

At the meeting, conduct regular business, have an art presentation and elect new Board members to fill some vacancies on the Board of Directors.  Notices and position descriptions will be sent out in May.  If you are interested in joining the Board and becoming a decision maker in the organization, please let Anne Cyr know.  We are always looking for new people to share their expertise and ideas.  We would love to hear from you.  Anne can be reached at (302) 226-7781.
